Classic 'Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles' To Crossover With New CG Series

The US Kids' networks seem to be riding a wave of nostalgia right now, with content that seems as much aimed at older viewers than their traditional target audience. The latest series to get in on it is the current incarnation of the iconic Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, which is set to crossover with their 1980s/90s equivalent.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles started as a satirical indie comic that became the unlikely inspiration for the phenomenally successful mainstream animated series. The franchise has since spun off several subsequent TV series, a little-known anime video series, a series of movies ( both live-action and animated) and dozens of video-games, but to many the original TV series was the definitive TMNT.

The classic-style Heroes in a Half Shell are set to appear in the current Turtles show, which has run on Nickelodeon since 2012. The CG animated series will cross-over with the retro turtles in the Episode 'Trans-dimensional Turtles', that will see the 3D Michelangelo, Donatello, Raphael and Leonardo journey into a two-dimensional universe. The old-school turtles will then return the favour and visit their modern day equivalent- allowing the classic turtles to appear in 3D for the first time.

The original TMNT actors will return to reprise their roles. What's pretty interesting to note though is that the legendary voice actor Rob Paulsen is a member of both casts- although as it happens he voices two completely different turtles.

This isn't completely new territory for the franchise, as the 2009 movie Turtles Forever saw the original TV turtles crossover with their opposite numbers from the 2003 incarnation, and the original Mirage Comics version. This is the first time the CG Turtles have appeared in a crossover event, however.

The episode will air in the US on March 27th (Easter Sunday). Get your first look at the episode in the clip below.
