'Inside Out,' 'Boy and The World' Triumph at the Annies.
The Oscars, BAFTAs and Golden Globes are all very well, but in the animation industry, the Annie Awards are arguably the biggest draw. While other ceremonies restrict animation to a category or two, at the Annies every facet of animation is celebrated and rewarded. And in recent years ASIFA-Hollywood's event has been drawing ever more attention outside the industry too. This year's event took place on Saturday the 6th of February in California.
Nobody will be too surprised that it was a big night for Pixar. Having scored a record 25 nominations (having two features and a short in the running) they were definitely the front runners. Inside Out was the biggest winner, taking home a whopping 11 awards. These included the major awards for Best Animated Feature, Outstanding Director in an Animated Feature and writing. Pixar's Good Dinosaur won for Outstanding Effects. This year's event included the first awarding of the Best Animated Feature (Independent) which saw Ale Abreu's Boy And The World overcome strong competition from The Prophet, Marnie Was There and The Boy and The Beast.
Pixar lost out in the short category, with Don Hertzfeldt's World Of Tomorrow taking home the prize. In television, the spoils were a bit more evenly spread. The Simpsons won the Best animated Programme for General audience, while Wander Over Yonder took home the children's TV Prize. Bob's Burgers took two awards, best TV writing and best TV voice-acting for Kristen Schaal.
Juried Windsor McCay Awards for "career contributions to the art of animation" were given to Studio Ghibli legend Isao Takahata and Phil Roman, as well as posthumous award for Pixar's late Joe Ranft.
