New To US Cinemas: 'When Marnie Was There'
The wait is nearly over- for American fans at least. GKIDS are bringing Studio Ghibli's most recent film When Marnie Was There to cinemas across the US and Canada starting from May 22nd. Whatever Studio Ghibli's future may hold (and despite what you may have read elsewhere, nobody actually knows) this is their last film for the time being at least. It's also going to be the last Ghibli film directed by Hiromasa Yonebayashi, since he announced he has now left the studio.
We hope this won't be the last new Ghibli film, but it seems at least to be a fitting send off if it was. The reception has been fantastic (and we'll be sure to bring you a review as soon as we can). Based on Joan Robinson's English novel, the film concentrates on the friendship between Anna and the mysterious Marnie- a girl who may not be quite who she appears to be.
The film opens in New York and LA from the 22nd, expanding on to more markets from the 29th on.
The latest list of Screenings follows (via the film's official Facebook site!)
