How To Train Your Dragon 2 Is Now 2014's Biggest Animated Feature
Dreamworks sequel How To Train your Dragon 2 was one of the most hotly anticipated animated features of the year. It was surprising to most observers when the film opened below expectations in the United States, despite excellent reviews. The original was a smash hit, but would the planned third chapter now be put in peril? Number crunchers suggested that following current trends, the sequel might yet make up for its domestic shortfall with a monster opening overseas- and it has indeed proved to be true.
Following a very strong opening weekend in China, Dean DeBlois's sequel has soared past the $500 million mark. Not only does that put it ahead of the previous film's already impressive $495 million haul, it also takes it clear of Rio 2 to become the year's biggest animated hit at the global box-office so far. In its home market, Dragons 2 is a distant second to The Lego Movie, only managing 12th place overall. The toy-based brickbuster is in fact currently the second biggest film of the year overall in the US, but whether it can hold on until year's end is a different matter entirely. How To Train Your Dragon 2 is still playing in select cinemas in the US and UK.
