Pacific Rim Animated Series Details Revealed
Back when Guillermo del Toro confirmed that Pacific Rim 2 had been greenlit, he also announced an animated series was in the works- a detail lost on some movie news outlets. At the time no further details were announced, but in a new interview with Collider GDT has spilled a few crucial details. The current plan is to produce one series of 13 episodes, with more possible if it proves a success. It will apparently be aimed at young audiences- but then perhaps Pacific Rim was always best enjoyed with the mindset of at 13-year-old.
Storywise, it will be set between the first film and the upcoming sequel, and will introduce a new set of characters, new Jaegers and new Kaiju. Characters (and robots) from the original are expected to make cameos but will not be the focus. Del Toro is adamant that it will be a serialised story, rather than a "monster of the week" type show, noting that "my favourite Anime series always have a long Arc".
Speaking of anime, del Toro confirms that they have been talking to several Japanese studios about production. We'd imagine that there will likely be strong competition between the studios over who gets this gig, as it's likely to be high-profile worldwide. Production I.G. or Madhouse would be a good fit, but it remains to be seen. They've also been talking to various showrunners with a background in animation, but it seems nothing is set in stone yet.
If like us, you're a big fan of Pacific Rim and anime this is a project that can't come soon enough. You can check out the full interview here.
