It's Official: 'NickToons' Crossover Movie In Development
Children of the 90's prepare for a major hit of nostalgia, as the major animation stars of Nickelodeon are preparing to make a comeback on the big screen. Nickelodeon have recently been realising that their is still a lot of love for their back-catalogue and have been planning on resurrecting several of them in various forms, with the first to be revealed so far being Hey Arnold's Jungle Movie.
A little while ago there was a rumour doing the rounds that an Avengers-style NickToons crossover movie was in the works. It was suggested that it would be a hybrid animated/live-action movie (possibly in the style of the sequence in the recent Spongebob movie). It seems that the project was indeed the real deal, as it has now signed a director.
Jared Hess, best known for Napoleon Dynamite and Nacho Libre has signed on to direct the film for Paramount. Hess will co-write with his writing partner (and wife) Jarusha Hess, based on an idea by Ali Mendes.
This will not be either Hess's first brush with animation, as they were both involved with the sadly short-lived TV incarnation of Napoleon Dynamite in 2012. No further details have been released at this time.
This includes which characters we might expect to see in this unlikely team-up. Obvious candidates are the casts of Rugrats, Ren and Stimpy, Rocko's Modern Life and Hey Arnold. But what unlikely event will see them brought together (and presumably, into the real world)? Will it be restricted to characters of that era, or will more recent characters get a look in too? All that remains to be seen.
It's a smart idea though, and combines the current boom in 90's nostalgia with Hollywood's current obsession with shared universes and crossovers. And who knows, perhaps it will lead to a series of new movies featuring some of the individual series?
