Dreamworks Animation's "Home" Invades the UK Box Office
Home is not just another release for Dreamworks Animation. Following a string of under-performers in recent years, the studio has been in financial difficulty. With Kung Fu Panda 3 moved into 2016, Home alone (no pun intended) is carrying the torch for DWA this year. The pressure for it to succeed, therefore, shouldn't be understated. Last weekend saw the film begin it's staggered global release, opening in 9 territories, including the UK.
Despite a mixed critical reception, audiences seem to have taken to it and the early figures are good. Very good in fact, racking up north of $19 million already. The film shot straight to number one in the UK box office chart with an impressive $9.6m haul. The opening is the strongest for any DWA film in the territory outside the Shrek franchise. With the Easter holidays coming up, the film should be able to benefit from the family audience for the next few weeks at least- although it will face stiff competition from Disney's Cinderella- and accompanying short Frozen Fever- which is opening this Friday.
This is an encouraging start for the movie, which is due to open in an additional 55 territories this weekend- including the United States. Hopefully, Home will be able to keep up the momentum and help turn it's ailing studio's fortunes around.
Home is the story of an unlikely friendship between an alien (voiced by Jim Parsons) and a young girl (voiced by Rihanna) and will open in North American cinemas on Friday March 27th.
