Golden Globes Name 'How To Train Your Dragon 2' 2014's Best Animated Feature

The Golden Globes, the first major event in the award season took place last night in Hollywood. With 2014 having yielded a particularly strong crop of animated films, the voters of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association had a tough choice. In the end, though, Dreamworks Animation's How To Train Your Dragon 2 emerged victorious.

The Dragons overcame stiff competition from Disney (Big Hero 6) Laika (The Boxtrolls), Warner Bros (The Lego Movie) and Fox (The Book Of Life). The Globes have run the category since 2006, and this is the first time Dreamworks has won- in fact it's actually only the second time a film not made by Pixar or Disney has won. Is it a surprising win? It certainly true that the Dean DeBlois directed sequel hasn't been greeted with quite the universal praise heaped on its predecessor, and its box-office haul was seen as a relative disappointment (domestically at least). So if nothing else, it's nice to see the creative team's vision vindicated in this way.

This year's animated award field is much less predictable than last year's (where Frozen won everything) so this is unlikely to be replicated everywhere. Dragons 2 wasn't even nominated for a BAFTA, and the Oscar nominations haven't even been announced yet- so there may be more surprises still to come.
